1. Unpacking the NYS Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards - closed

The NYS Department of Education has developed new standards for computer science and digital fluency that encompass grades K-12. 2. Suicide Awareness and Prevention Tools for Educators - closed

In this workshop, participants will understand the prevalence of suicide among school-aged children, the groups and cultures that are at higher risk, and the impact that suicide can have on a community. Educators will be introduced to the warning signs that indicate suicidal risk among students and learn how to respond to the signs. Participants will also learn direct and indirect ways to create a safe and supportive environment that supports students’ social and emotional needs as well as gain knowledge of mental health resources across Long Island. 3. Cybersecurity - closed

We have become a digital world. Are you aware of the risks to your privacy?  How safe are those apps you download on your phone? At the end of this class, participants will understand the difference between a computer virus, malware, phishing, and smishing. We will explore the many ways privacy can be invaded, and learn the necessary steps to avoid this intrusion. In September 2024, the Computer Science and Digital Fluency Standards will be implemented in all grade bands. Teachers will investigate the cybersecurity domain and create lessons they can use in their classrooms. The instructor will contact registrants prior to the start date.

4. Using Media to Build Argumentative Skills  -closed

To leave high school both college and career ready, our students need to have the ability to compose well-written arguments, yet many lack the background knowledge to develop these arguments. In this course, we will explore how to use Ted Talks, political cartoons, documentary films, and articles of the week to help our students gain confidence to construct claims and to effectively use supportive evidence. 5. Mindfulness in Schools -closed

Educators will learn the powerful role mindfulness plays in their self-care practice as well as in the classroom. Mindfulness practices aid educators to cultivate awareness of their emotions, thoughts and somatic experiences which enhance their capacity to regulate emotions, manage stress and arrive in the classroom with more presence and authenticity. This course will provide evidence-based practices that teach compassionate awareness for their present experience to foster greater connectivity in the classroom to create safe and genuine spaces for learning. 6. Google Slides: Beyond the Basics -closed

Are you ready to take your Google Slides presentations to the next level by making them more interactive for students? Google Slides can be so much more than an alternative to PowerPoint presentations; it can bring content to life to engage students in the learning process. In this course, we will create interactive game-show-style review games, design self-paced assessments, write a choose your own adventure story, create a sticky note brainstorming activity, design a book snap and a magnetic poetry activity, develop a bitmoji classroom, and create drag and drop activities. 7. Cyberbullying & Internet Safety -closed

Internet safety and the rise of cyberbullying are two serious educational concerns that are affecting the school community. The goal of this course is to educate teachers on the issue of internet safety. Teachers will also learn how to contribute to the development of a cyber smart student as well as promote internet safety through instruction. The course will provide a forum for teachers to discuss the demanding challenge of protecting students from virtual bullying and internet predators. In addition, participants will review national and local cyber bullying cases and the legislative initiatives being placed on educators in order to prevent student harm. 8. Social-Emotional Learning  in the Post-Pandemic Classroom -closed

In 2018, NYSED identified the following goals to guide the K-12 Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Benchmarks for New York State Schools: develop self-awareness and self-management skills essential to success in school and in life, use social awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships, and demonstrate ethical decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in personal, school, and community contexts. This  course will focus on understanding, accessing, and implementing the New York State Social Emotional Learning Benchmarks in classrooms of all grades and disciplines. Participants will explore the NYS K-12 Social Emotional Learning Benchmarks, research best practices to help their students meet the benchmarks, and learn how to infuse them into interdisciplinary lessons. 9. Essential Technology Tools for Teachers Part I -closed

This course is designed to provide educators with the know-how necessary to immediately implement technology based activities in their classrooms. Participants will evaluate their current level of technology integration. Topics covered will include the creation/use of Hyperdocs, tools for collaboration and creativity such as Flip, Nearpod, Padlet, Book Creator, and Screencastify, and best informative apps such as Brainpop, EdPuzzle, Ted Ed, and Newsela. The vital role of teachers in the 21st-century depends on a deep understanding of best instructional practices in the digital world. 10. Teaching and Learning with a Growth Mindset -closed

Cultivating a growth mindset enables students to embrace challenges with open arms. Failure is viewed as a learning experience. Teaching students in this way fosters the idea that their abilities and talents can improve with hard work and effort, and as a result, student engagement and performance can markedly improve. Topics covered in this course include: diving into the understanding of mindset, recognizing the power of praise, creating concrete methods to model and teach growth mindset, and designing a classroom environment focused on growth mindset. The purpose of this course is to provide participants with an opportunity to explore how changing student mindset can lead to educational gains and the steps necessary to do so. 11. Special Education (SE) Certification Extension Course 10-12- closed

Dates:  4/17/23 to 6/12/23

(Synchronous:  4/17, 5/8, 6/5 - 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. / Asynchronous: 39 hours)

In June of 2018, NYS approved certification pathways for special education teachers interested in extending their existing certification to grades 10-12. The requirements for these extensions include experience in one or both of the grade levels nearest the extension, a current NYS Students with Disabilities (SWD)  Generalist certification, and a 45-hour NYSED approved course in the extension grade band. Eligible teachers must have a SWD 5-9 NYS Certification and a minimum of three (3) years teaching experience at 8th and/or 9th grade levels. This program meets the NYSED criteria for extending an existing NYS Students with Disabilities Generalist Certification. Participants will complete 45 hours of coursework that qualifies to extend Certification to SWD Grades 10-12. There will be three sections of work: Knowledge of Students, Instructional Strategies and Professional Practice. Content is aligned to the NYS Teaching and Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Standards. This entire course will be conducted online via Google Classroom (live discussions) and an online work platform. The instructor will contact registrants prior to the start date.

12. Engaging Students Through Student Centered Activities-closed

In this course, we will focus on how to engage students in every step of the learning process. Students who play an active role in their own education are happier in our classes and more motivated to produce quality work. We will work on adapting current activities to increase student engagement. We will cover strategies such as gallery walks, pop up discussions, carousels, choice boards, and escaping the “box.” Teachers will leave class with activities they can implement immediately into their classrooms to ignite their students’ passion for learning. Teachers will vary the typical methods of delivering information moving away from lecturing to more cooperative, active experiences for students. Assignments will be posted on Sundays. 13. How to Create a Positive Environment for Students with Social Anxiety- closed

Students with social anxiety have an intense fear of being negatively evaluated, judged, and rejected in social situations. Such social anxiety leads to other problems, and with some students,  the result is school avoidance. In this class, we will focus on effective intervention strategies as well as learn how to help students in identifying negative thinking styles that are harmful to  different dimensions of their wellness. 14. Inclusive School Climate for LGBTQIA+ Folks- closed

In this course, participants will explore how to create a safe, affirming, and inclusive school community for all. We will focus on  the needs and realities of LGBTQIA+ students, families, and staff through the lens of research, exploration of GLSEN’s National School Climate Survey, group discussion, and reflection. Terminology, resources, and contemporary issues will be discussed along with the impact of microaggressions, “isms,” and “obias'' on LGBTQIA+ folks and talk about best practices for inclusivity. Kids growing up in the digital age have a different outlook on life and learning. Technology is affecting the way students think and focus. This course will explore how technology influences a student’s attention span, decision-making, reasoning, memory and ability to learn. Teachers taking the course will discuss how to integrate technology into lessons that will enhance student achievement while examining countermeasures to ease the influence of the negative effects of technology that impede student academic achievement. By the end of the course, teachers will create a number of lessons and assessments that will help differentiate instruction. We will explore Quizzizz, EdPuzzle, Google tools including, Sites, Drawing, Slides, and Forms, Kahoot, Quizlet, among others. 18. Reaching Students Through Culturally Diverse Picture Books -closed

Picture books often resonate with students of all ages. In this course, you will learn how picture books can celebrate the uniqueness of all those around you. We will discuss  numerous titles about accepting differences in gender, race, religion, language, appearance and abilities.
