In this 15-hour hybrid professional learning course, teachers will explore how to introduce simple coding and robotics instruction in their elementary classrooms to increase student engagement and further students’ social-emotional learning and interdisciplinary computational thinking skills. Teachers will create lesson plans to address the NYS K-12 Computer Science and Digital Fluency standards, self-reflect on their instructional implementation, and collaborate with colleagues in peer review.
As part of the course, teachers will receive a long-term loan of Edison robots for this class and their classroom. There is no cost to the district or teacher for the course or loan of robots.

Participants in this course will explore the various nuances of social media and how they affect our daily lives in and out of the classroom. We will learn to more closely evaluate news sources, we will better understand the risks and threats of social media, and we will explore ethical practices regarding social media. Participants will create learning materials and lesson plans that help guide students towards responsible and safe social media citizenship.

This course is designed for educators, school counselors, and staff to equip themselves with the knowledge and practical tools to support children of divorce in school settings. Divorced families can significantly impact children’s emotional, academic, and social well-being. This course will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the challenges these children face and empower educators to create supportive environments for them.

Extend your Students with Disabilities (SWD) Certification to Grades 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and/or 10-12 and increase your versatility as a special education teacher. In June of 2018, NYS approved certification pathways for special education teachers interested in extending their existing certification(s). The requirements for these extensions include experience in one or both of the grade levels nearest the extension, a current NYS Students with Disabilities (SWD) Generalist certification, and a 45-hour NYSED approved course in the extension grade band. There will be three sections of work: Knowledge of Students, Instructional Strategies, and Professional Practice. Content is aligned to the NYS Teaching and Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Standards. Promoting flexibility, this entire course will be conducted online via Google Classroom.

We will dedicate focused sessions to mastering essential applications such as Google Drive, Docs, Forms, Sheets, and Slides - uncovering their unique functionalities and seamless collaboration within the education environment. Educators will gain practical strategies to leverage these tools to enrich their curriculum and cultivate advanced technology skills in their students. Participants will also learn how to navigate Google Chromebooks and utilize Google Workspace on those devices.

We will study Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris' Big Book (a large format illustrated book) "The Lost Words." This book sparked a cultural phenomenon when it was published in Britain, and spawned an array of wonderful student classroom activities and teaching units. We will be looking at those resources as we move through the course. The precipitating event was the publication of an edition of the Oxford Junior Dictionary that removed "an enormous number of flower and nature words starting with 'Acorn'...." The course will also introduce the literary lens Eco-criticism which centers upon ecological celebration and concern.

Literature circles are more than just small group book clubs - they’re powerful tools for fostering student voice, critical thinking, and authentic engagement with texts. In this course, educators will explore how to implement literature circles that work across all grade levels and classroom contexts, whether students are reading the same novel or working in diverse groups with different texts. Participants will learn how to structure roles and responsibilities, differentiate by reading level and interest, and use literature circles with whole-class texts or choice-based reading. Providing different learning stations within the elementary classroom where students can work independently or in small groups is an effective way to engage in focused learning on a particular skill or subject. Centers can also be designed to cater to different learning styles, allowing teachers to address individual needs.
